Silence is never merely the absence of sound. Silence is, rather, the Wellspring of sound, and present before, during, and after all sound. To enjoy Silence, one returns Home, not by negating sound but by surrendering to the wordless Word. The most articulate language of Love is Silence.

Theophilus of Holy Memory, Bishop of Alexandria, traveled to Scetis. The brethren, after convening, said to Abba Pambo, "Say a word or two to the Bishop, that his soul may be edified in this place." The old man said, "If my silence does not edify him, there is no hope that my words will edify him."

Christianity is a religion of the Word. The Word is Love. But we sometimes forget that the Word emerges first of all from silence. When there is no silence, then the One Word which God speaks is not truly heard as Love. Then only ‘words’ are heard. ‘Words’ are not love, for they are many and Love is One. Where there are many words, we lose consciousness of the fact that there is really only One Word. The One Word which God speaks is Himself. Speaking, He manifests Himself as infinite Love.
